How much does emergency dental treatment cost?
The price of emergency dental treatment will vary depending on the type of your emergency and how difficult it is to treat. Often the treatment required may be quite simple and treatment such as a filling may be all that is required to provide relief. In other situations, more comprehensive treatment may be needed to help resolve your dental emergency. Your dentist will be able to explain the cost of different treatment options at your first appointment.
If your emergency has been the result of an accident the cost may be partly covered by ACC. Your dentist will be able to guide you as to whether this is applicable for your situation.
What can I do to help with dental pain?
If you're suffering from toothache or another dental emergency you should visit a dentist as soon as possible. If you cannot see a dentist immediately there are ways you can help manage the pain. Using pain relief medication from the chemist will help to ease the pain. Using cold compresses and ice packs to reduce swelling, or using pillows to keep your head raised while trying to sleep will also help to manage the pain.
If your dental emergency has occurred outside our office hours and you are unable to reach us please use our online booking system to schedule an appointment. Simply select emergency as the reason for your appointment and we will contact you as soon as possible to ensure we are providing the best care for you.
What should I do when a tooth falls out?
A lost tooth is one of the more common dental emergencies and it is important to act quickly.
If you think a child has lost a baby tooth do not put it back in the socket. This can damage the new permanent tooth growing underneath. If you are unsure whether it is an adult or baby tooth do not try to re-insert it.
For adults, try not to touch the tooth at the root to avoid any additional damage. Rinse the tooth using water, milk, or a saline solution to clean it. Do not wipe or scrub the tooth. If possible try to put your tooth back into position in the empty socket and hold the tooth in place by gently biting down on medical gauze or soft fabric. If reinserting the tooth isn’t possible, place the tooth in their mouth between the cheek and gum.
The sooner you can see the dentist, the higher the chance we have of saving your tooth. If you are unable to contact us go straight to a hospital emergency room.
What should you do if you break a tooth?
No matter how damaged the tooth is, it is important that you seek dental advice as soon as possible. If left untreated even small problems can become painful, and often costly, issues.
